The city is also home of The Asheville Project, a nationally recognized program considered an inspirational healthcare model. Medipreneurs Summit speaker, Dan Garrett, was one of the founders of The Asheville Project, and Medipreneur Co-Founder Dr. Anna Garrett managed the program for Mission Hospital. The program provides education and personal oversight for city employees with chronic health problems such as diabetes, asthma, hypertension and high cholesterol. The Asheville Project, elevated the role of pharmacists to better manage diabetes among its citizens.
The model is recognized by the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) and “has been incorporated into and adapted through the Foundation’s extensive research in diabetes and other chronic diseases.” The Asheville Project gave pharmacists the ability to develop thriving patient care services in their community pharmacies.
Lonely Planet describes Asheville best: “With its homegrown microbreweries, decadent chocolate shops and stylish New Southern eateries, Asheville is one of the trendiest small cities in the East. Glossy magazines swoon for the place. But don’t be put off by all the flash. At heart, Asheville is still an overgrown mountain town and it holds tight to its traditional roots.”
